“Remus!” his mother called breathlessly, her tone fondly exasperated. “Please don’t wander off out of my sight.”
“But mama!” The boy protested, his eyes wide. “I think that mama wolf is gonna let the puppies outta the den today! C’mon! We might miss it!” He stood at the edge of the forest, maybe a hundred feet away, impatiently waiting for her to finish gathering her supplies.
“Give me just another minute, my love.” She laughed, watching him out of the corner of her eye but most of her attention focused on double checking her basket. Her head shot up as he yelped. “No!”
The boy was squirming, fighting, yelling for his captor to let him go, kicking and swinging, though he was a good three feet off of the ground and well out of reach. The werewolf watched him curiously, distantly amused, before turning to face Alana.
“Please!” She screamed. “Let him go. He’s just a boy!”
“Now why in the world would I do that? He is such a tender, juicy morsel.” The beast drawled in a cold, deep voice that rumbled through her bones, before leaning closer to the boy and breathing in deeply. “I can smell the potential within him, witch. He will be a formidable addition to my pack.”
Remus’ struggles became even more frantic, and he landed a wild swing on the beast’s snout, connecting with a solid crack! that knocked his head to one side. The werewolf snarled, went to lunge – ”
“WAIT!” Alana cried desperately. “Take me instead!”
The two combatants froze, both turning to look at her.
“I…will go willingly. I know you, Fenrir Greyback. You live feral, have rejected human ways. I am a healer. I can tend to your pack, ensure it survives and grows. Only leave my son, and I will go with you.”
Greyback considered her for a long moment. “You have a bargain, witch.”
“Thank God.” She breathed. “Remus, darling – ”
“Still, the terms were to leave him…not leave him unharmed. And I want to keep track of this potentially strong young wolfling.” He bit savagely into Remus’ shoulder, teeth driving deep as he screamed in pain, writhing helplessly. Dropping him as if he were garbage, the werewolf caught Alana as she made an aborted attempt to flee, and Apparated them both away.
